Atlantic Salmon Return to Fish Creek

Harden Furniture’s efforts to restore the Atlantic Salmon to neighboring Fish Creek will take another step forward in 2011. Following a successful first season and the release of approximately 5,000 salmon fry from the test hatchery, construction is underway to expand the effort to accommodate an estimated 15,000 eggs next season. The hatchery is populated in February with eggs harvested from salmon in Maine, hatch when water temperatures rise in the early spring, and following testing by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation the fry are released in June.

The salmon’s remarkable and instinctive ability to return after a two year migration to the same stream where they were hatched guarantees that a meaningful population will return in 2012. If all goes according to plan a specie that has been absent from Fish Creek for over 100 years will soon return.
